A guide to portraits

Your wedding day is a significant milestone where you celebrate your love and commitment. Capturing these magical moments allows you to relive them time and again, sharing them with loved ones now and in the future. As a wedding photographer in Northern Ireland, it's always an honor when couples trust me to document their big day.

During the wedding planning process, I often receive two important questions:

  1. Should we set aside time for wedding portraits?

  2. When is the best time of day for photos?

These are excellent questions, and I've put together this blog to share some insights, whether you're getting married in Northern Ireland or elsewhere across the UK.

Should We Include Wedding Portraits?

Many couples may feel a bit camera-shy or unsure about having their photos taken throughout the day. It's perfectly normal! However, these portraits often become the most cherished images. They capture intimate moments and the genuine emotions of your wedding day—the happiness, laughter, and the deep connection you share. Plus, my aim is to make you feel relaxed and ensure we have a great time together—it's all about capturing authentic moments!

Taking a brief break for portraits also provides you both with a chance to step away from the excitement and enjoy a moment alone together. While your wedding day is filled with loved ones, almost every couple I've worked with values this quiet time to reflect and savor being newlyweds.

When's the Best Time for Portraits?

Choosing the right time for portraits depends on your wedding day timeline and preferences. Many couples opt for photos after the ceremony and before the reception kicks off, while guests enjoy a few drinks.

Personally, I love capturing portraits during the 'golden hour' before sunset. The warm, soft light during this magical time adds a beautiful glow to your photos, creating stunning results you'll absolutely adore. Even if we've taken some portraits earlier, I often suggest a quick session during this hour—it's pure magic!

'Golden hour' light is breathtaking throughout the year, especially during spring and summer weddings in Northern Ireland, where we're treated to extended periods of this beautiful light.

Remember, it's your special day, and there's no one-size-fits-all approach. As your photographer, my priority is to ensure you feel comfortable, at ease, and to deliver a collection of relaxed and natural portraits you'll cherish forever.
